GTA VI is rated M by the ESRB and 18 by PEGI
Grand Theft Auto VI has an official age rating. The American ESRB gives the game an M for Mature. In Europe PEGI rates it 18. The ratings now appear on the store pages of the game.
What the ESRB lists
The ESRB names blood and gore, intense violence, mature humour, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content and the use of drugs and alcohol, IGN writes. So far the board has only published these short descriptors. A longer summary, in which it often describes specific scenes, is not yet available.
The rating also mentions in-game purchases. Earlier this year Rockstar Games said there would be no monetisation in GTA VI, according to IGN. The news site points out that the ESRB may also count the extra content of the Ultimate Edition. Nothing official is known yet about an online mode for GTA VI.
Sex scenes in Australia and New Zealand
On the PlayStation Store in Australia and New Zealand, the rating of GTA VI also lists sex scenes. The British and American store pages do not mention them, IGN reports.
The short rating of GTA V on its store page only says sex, although that game contains at least one sex scene. Whether the rating boards changed their terms since then, or whether GTA VI has more scripted scenes, is not known. The story of GTA VI centres on the relationship between Jason and Lucia.
Hot Coffee in San Andreas
In 2005 the ESRB changed the rating of GTA San Andreas to AO, Adults Only. Modders had unlocked a hidden sex scene that was still in the game files. Several shops then pulled the game for a while.
GTA VI is due on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
