IGN traces the strangest GTA myths, from Darkel to Mount Chiliad
IGN has made a video of 19 minutes about the strangest myths in Grand Theft Auto. It runs from cut content in GTA III to the mystery of Mount Chiliad in GTA V. At the end, IGN looks at what that means for GTA VI.
The video appeared on 29 October and is also on the YouTube channel of IGN.
Darkel and the Dodo
GTA III came out after a delay of three weeks, following the attacks of 11 September 2001. Rockstar Games changed about 1 percent of the game, according to IGN. Fans long wondered what else had been removed.
The Dodo, a plane with clipped wings, was one suspect. A design document shows that it never had to fly, IGN says: a plane that flies would outrun how fast the PlayStation 2 could load the world. Darkel, a character who handed out odd jobs, was cut well before the attacks. A name in the credits and an unused texture remain.
Bigfoot in San Andreas
Stories about Bigfoot in San Andreas went round within days of the release in 2004. The Hot Coffee affair, with a hidden sex minigame on the disc, made fans believe that Rockstar buries secrets. Co-founder Terry Donovan said there is no Bigfoot. Modders never found a model in the files either.
Rockstar did play along. Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption has several Sasquatches. In GTA V, Franklin meets a hunter who has chased Bigfoot for years.
Ratman in GTA IV
In GTA IV, the myth moved to the subway of Liberty City. Forum threads about Ratman appeared within weeks of the release, with orange puddles and strange squeaks as clues. Ratman was never found in the game or its files. A wiki on GTA myths, founded in 2012, now holds about 1,500 pages.
Mount Chiliad
The mural at the top of Mount Chiliad in GTA V shows a UFO, an egg and a figure with a jetpack. After 100 percent completion, a UFO appears there at 3:00 in the rain. The Doomsday Heist of 2017 in GTA Online revealed a base inside the mountain and a working jetpack.
And GTA VI
The hunt now turns to leaks before a game comes out, rather than secrets inside it, IGN concludes. What GTA VI hides is not known. The game comes out on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
