Sony releases PS5 update 14.20 a month before GTA VI
Sony has released system software 26.07-14.20.00 for the PlayStation 5. According to the official patch notes, it only improves the messages and usability on some screens. The update arrives as the homebrew scene tries to jailbreak newer firmware, less than a month before Grand Theft Auto VI.
The update weighs 1.2 GB, IGN writes. The patch notes on the support site of PlayStation contain a single line. Sony does not mention security.
A race with the homebrew scene
Late last month a jailbreak appeared for every PS5 on firmware 7.00 to 13.60, the PS5 Pro included, according to IGN. A jailbroken console can be modified, and that can open the door to piracy.
Some games then required firmware 14.00 to download updates. Since then, the homebrew scene has been working on a jailbreak for the newer firmware. A known member of that scene recently showed a jailbreak for 14.10, IGN writes. According to later comments, it cannot extract the executable files of games.
What it means for GTA VI
Part of the community fears that a jailbreak for the firmware that GTA VI requires could lead to pirated copies of the game. Which firmware GTA VI needs is not known. There is no indication that update 14.20 is a response to the jailbreak for 14.10, IGN writes. Sony may release more updates before 19 November.
GTA VI comes out on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The preload starts on 12 November.
