Sony pays 50,000 dollar for a PS5 bug found with AI

A hacker known as Jordy received 50,000 dollar from Sony for reporting a PlayStation 5 bug found with AI, IGN writes. Part of the homebrew scene is angry. The bug could have kept Linux and Grand Theft Auto VI on one console.

A bug in the hypervisor

The bug sits in the hypervisor of the PS5, the layer below the system software. It affects firmware 13.60 up to 14.00, according to IGN. With it, a console can run its own code, for example to start Linux.

Jordy reported the bug through HackerOne, a platform where companies pay for reported security holes. In a conversation with IGN, Jordy confirmed using generative AI to find it.

A researcher stops

Andy Nguyen, a security engineer at Google known as theflow0, had been working on Linux for the PS5 for months. According to Jordy, theflow0 found the same bug in 2025 and kept it secret. The plan was to keep it quiet until after 19 November.

The reason has to do with GTA VI. To download the game on release day, Sony requires the newest firmware and a sign in to PSN. A bug that was still open in that firmware would have let players buy the game legally and still start Linux on the same console, IGN writes.

After the report, theflow0 announced an end to all work on Linux for the PS5. That statement criticises hackers who use language models without understanding their own code. IGN could not reach theflow0 for a reaction.

Why Jordy reported it

Jordy and theflow0 first agreed not to report the bug, according to IGN. Another researcher then found the same bug, also with AI. Jordy then reported it before someone else could. Jordy denies being coached by theflow0.

Sony has since been able to close the hole before the release. Players who want to keep Linux must keep their PS5 offline, or update and lose Linux. Both Jordy and cybersecurity researcher Eric Parker expect more bugs of this kind, IGN writes.

Last week Sony released update 14.20, amid the same race with the homebrew scene. Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
