GTA VI gets its launch trailer, five weeks before release
Rockstar Games has released the launch trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI. The video of 90 seconds went online on 15 October at 15:00. It shows new scenes of Jason and Lucia and brings new music from Justice.
The trailer is below and on the official site. By early evening it had more than two million views on YouTube. Rockstar says everything in it was captured in-game on a PlayStation 5.
The past of Jason
The trailer opens with Jason speaking. He got into trouble in the army and did not leave on good terms, Jason says. Nobody gives loans to people like him, he says.
Jason is then seen polishing a boat at a marina when a call comes in. A recorded voice announces a free call from Lucia Caminos. IGN thinks this is the call that sends Jason to pick Lucia up from prison.
Other shots show a soldier wading through water with a unit and jumping out of a helicopter. According to IGN, these may be flashbacks to the time of Jason in the army. They could also be set in the present, IGN adds.
Lucia, and the two together
In one shot Lucia wears an ankle tag, IGN notes. The trailer also shows romantic scenes between the two leads, Tweakers writes. IGN mentions a scene in the shower.
Near the end Lucia asks Jason whether they are going to be okay. Jason answers that they have stuck together through everything and just have to get through it.
Rockstar sums up the story in its own text. An easy score goes wrong, and Jason and Lucia end up in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. They have to rely on each other to get out alive.
Action across Vice City
The trailer shows more of Vice City and plenty of action, according to Tweakers. There are glimpses of a bank robbery, fights with the police and shots from helicopters. In one scene someone hangs from a load that a helicopter carries across the city, IGN writes.
IGN also spots a dog next to Jason during a helicopter flight. A shot of a man working out may show the system for sweat that Rockstar described this week, according to IGN.
A new single from Justice
The electronic duo Justice composed the original score of Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar confirms. The trailer uses a new single by the duo, “Flower in a Hurricane”, with Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
The single is also on Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, the official soundtrack. Rockstar promises more about the music of the game soon, including an official album of the score.
What is not known
The trailer shows cinematic scenes rather than gameplay, IGN notes. Whether this is the last trailer before release, Rockstar does not say. Which model of PlayStation 5 was used is not stated either, and footage from the Xbox Series X and S has not been shown yet.
Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The preload starts on 12 November.
