GTA VI has a scripted system that makes its characters sweat
Grand Theft Auto VI has a scripted system that decides how much its characters sweat. The amount depends on the effort they put into an activity. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier heard it from Rockstar Games and shared it in a video.
A detail outside the article
Schreier posted the video of about 28 minutes on YouTube on 14 October. It accompanies the article by Schreier in Bloomberg Businessweek about the making of the game. The sweat system did not make it into that article, according to the video.
Rockstar told Schreier about a specific system in the game for sweat. Whoever dances extra hard in a nightclub sweats more than someone who does not, according to Schreier. The video names Lucia and Jason, and suggests other characters as well. Exactly which characters the system covers is not said.
Nightclubs as an example
Schreier gives the example as part of a wider point about detail. The developers talk a lot about nightclubs, Schreier says. They do not just recreate a club, but build simulations that make the inside work as a real one would.
Every character in a nightclub is modelled as an individual person, according to Schreier. The lighting moves to the rhythm of the music. Those systems cost time and money in ways that other big games do not spend it, the video says.
Why it took so long
Schreier names the level of detail as one reason for the long development. The biggest reason, according to Schreier, was the search for a vision in the first three or four years. That vision kept changing.
The article also describes a new studio in Los Angeles that works only on the characters players do not control. That studio and the rest of the story are in the earlier post about the article.
What is not known
Rockstar has not shown the system itself. Whether sweat also changes with heat, running or fighting is not known. IGN points to a short shot of Lucia dancing in a nightclub in the extended look from August, where her skin seems to glisten. That may also be the lighting, IGN adds.
