GTA VI gets tropical storms and hurricanes in Leonida
Grand Theft Auto VI gets tropical storms and hurricanes. Rockstar Games confirms that in the cover story of Game Informer, published on 29 September. Wind and rain react to the world, from rooftops to the swamps of Leonida.
How the weather works
The weather combines heavy clouds, strong wind, dense atmospheric effects and a lot of rain, writes Game Informer. Rockstar looked at how the weather looks, but also at how air moves.
After sunset, winds can come in from the sea and warm air can rise. Buildings affect the wind in turn. Air currents change when they pass tall buildings.
Rockstar uses these systems to make the world more dynamic. Wind blows hair and loose litter around on rooftops. Ripples form on the water, and the grass in the swamps bends in the wind.
Storms and hurricanes
During heavy storms the world changes clearly. Dark clouds move in, the wind picks up and dense rain limits what players can see. The rain can get heavy enough to leave everything visibly wet.
Water runs off roofs and street lamps during heavy rain. Thunder rolls, and lightning can light up the clouds over Leonida completely.
Leonida is based on Florida, where tropical storms and hurricanes are part of the climate. Grand Theft Auto VI appears on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
